Old Grand-Dad 114 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Old Grand-Dad Old Grand-Dad
NAS (No Age Statement)
Bottled at 114 Proof by Jim Beam in KY
I paid $26.99 in MA.  Uncommon to find on the shelf mainly because last year this was rumored to be going away, but in Feb. (2017) Beam announced more shipments would be available in Q2 of 2017.  Keep a look out!
Nose: Cinnamon and Lots of Rye
Taste: The Spice from the high rye mash bill is up front which really impact the taste at times, but once you get past the spice, it becomes sweet/fruity and lots of caramel with some burnt  sugar
Finish: Full, Long, Big Red Cinnamon with a little Oak
Value:  This was my first time having this one and I was really blown away by it.  Full of flavor, high proof and a great price!  If you see it on the shelf give it a try if you like high proof whiskey!

Smooth Ambler – Contradiction- Blend of Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Smooth Ambler – Contradiction– Blend of Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bottled at 100  Proof by Smooth Ambler Spirits, WV
This one is a blend of 2 bourbons.  First one is a 2 year wheat bourbon and the second one is a 9 year rye bourbon.
I haven’t seen this bottle in MA, but in my travels to San Fran was able to pick it up for $48.
Nose – Alcohol burn hits you right away, some dill spices
Taste – Refreshing, Good amount of oak, sweetness from the wheat comes through,a bit of spice from the rye and vanilla.
Finish – Long and a bit harsh, strong burn hits and stays with you, a bit of oak.
Value – This one’s a bit a rough to drink neat, but adding an ice cube really gets rid of the burn on the finish and makes this actually really tasty.

There is no age statement on the bottle, but since it’s Bottled in Bond it’s aged at least 4 years
Bottled at 100 Proof by Heaven Hill Distillery in Pennsylvania
Uncommon here in MA, but you can find it pretty easily if you know where to look for it.  Typically runs from $20-$24
Nose: Cinnamon, hint of Vanilla and some Honey
Taste: Fruity, Leathery, Dry, touch of Caramel
Finish:  Big Rye Explosion takes over at the end
Value:  Excellent for the price!  A bit spicy for neat, but on the rocks is perfect and hold up really well for mixed cocktails!

Hochstadter’s Slow & Low Rock and Rye

This one isn’t a straight Rye Whiskey.  It’s more of flavored whiskey made with straight Rye Whiskey. They consider it a premixed cocktail in a bottle
No Age Statement on the bottle just says “made with aged rye,”  Hochstadter’s Rye Whiskey is normally blended with Rye Whiskey aged between 4-15 years.
Bottled at 84 Proof in Pennsylvania
I see this one here and there (usually on the bottom shelf) in liquor stores in MA runs from $15-$20
Nose: Very Potent Orange Zest
Taste: Sweet, Smooth, Honey and Citrus over powers your mouth
Finish: Medium lots of Orange Zest still lingers with some Spice from the Rye
Value:  Is it something to go out of your way to get? I’d say no, but if your looking for something sweet drink over ice I’d say you can’t go wrong for the price point on this one.

Four Roses Single Barrel OBSF – Private Selection aged 11 years 9 months – Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Four Roses Single Barrel OBSF – Private Selection aged 11 years and 9 months – Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bottled at 110.8 Proof by Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY
The normal Four Roses Single Barrel OBSF isn’t too hard to find, but this one was a store pick by Wollaston Wine & Spirits in Quincy, MA.  So that’s the only place you will ever be able to find this bottle from Barrel (81-4 P) while supplies last for $62.99.
Nose – Medium Oakiness, Light Vanilla, Maple Syrup, Hint of Medicinal (until some air opens it up)
Taste – Robust, Vanilla, Toffee, Brown Sugar, Pepper, Touch of Sweetness from Cherries
Finish – Big Spice comes through from the high rye, Hint of Mint Lingers until you take your next sip
Value –  Amazing! The extra proof in this one really brings out the flavors and holds up well on the rocks.  Highly recommend picking a bottle up if your passing through Quincy!

Bottled at 112.8 Proof by Austin, Nicholas Distilling Company in Lawrenceburg, KY
Not common, but can be found with a little effort in MA for $35
Nose – Spicy, Little bit of Oak and Vanilla
Taste – Definitely some burn as expected it to be from the high 112.8 proof, but it’s from the Rye, once you get past that you pick up Citrus, Vanilla and Toffee
Finish – Long, Dry, Oak and Caramel that slowly fades away
Value –  Quality smooth barrel proof bourbon at an inexpensive cost!

Elmer T. Lee – Single Barrel Bourbon

ElmerTLee.jpgElmer T. Lee Single Barrel – Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bottled at 90 Proof, Distilled at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, KY
No Age Statement on the bottle, but it’s said to be aged for 12 years
I seem to find this one locally pretty often every few weeks.  Paid $30 have seen it as low as $28 and as high as $50 in MA.
Nose – Honey, Vanilla and Clove
Taste – Honey, Raisins, Pepper and Cherries
Finish – Long and Warm, Burnt Sugar, some Oak,
Value – There is a lot of hype about this bottle!  If you can find for $30-$35 I’d say give it a shot if you’ve never tried it.  It’s a single barrel bourbon that is supposedly aged 12 years so that’s a great price.  Personally I still can’t seem to like this one.  A lot of people I know love it, but to me it’s just not there, it’s missing something.
