Hard to find, but I have had a lot success lately with my local shops in MA for $18.99
Nose – Sweet Caramel, Vanilla, with a touch a Oak
Taste – Very Smooth, Honey, Vanilla, Little Oak comes through,
Finish – Warm, Sweet and then a quick Burn appears
Value – Can’t beat it for the price! One of the better values bourbons out there.  Great to sip neat or on ice. If you can find it on the shelf well worth to give it a try.

Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon

michters-toasted-barrel-finish-bourbonMichter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon
Bottled at 91.4 Proof by Michter’s Distillery in Louisville, KY
This bourbon is blended.  They use bourbon barrel aged around 8 years and then placed to aged in a second barrel which is assembled from 18-month air dried wood and then toasted but not charred.
This one was quite hard to find in MA and probably is all over.  It’s small batch limited release in 2014 and 2015.  They just recently announced they weren’t releasing it this year for 2016 in order to keep up with the demand of their regular Bourbon.  I ended up finding a local store down the Cape that still had a few bottles left from last years batch. Priced in MA $50-$65.
Nose – Sweet, Some Oak, and Caramel
Taste –   Dry, Oily, Vanilla, Oak, a bit Burnt, Nutty, with bursts of Spicy Cinnamon,
Finish – Long Burst of Cinnamon lingers in your mouth
Value –  Pretty unique! If you see it on the shelf it’s worth the purchase to give it a try.

Four Roses Single Barrel OBSF – Private Selection aged 11 years and 9 months – Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bottled at 110.8 Proof by Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY
The normal Four Roses Single Barrel OBSF isn’t too hard to find, but this one was a store pick by Wollaston Wine & Spirits in Quincy, MA.  So that’s the only place you will ever be able to find this bottle from Barrel (81-4 P) while supplies last for $62.99.
Nose – Medium Oakiness, Light Vanilla, Maple Syrup, Hint of Medicinal (until some air opens it up)
Taste – Robust, Vanilla, Toffee, Brown Sugar, Pepper, Touch of Sweetness from Cherries
Finish – Big Spice comes through from the high rye, Hint of Mint Lingers until you take your next sip
Value –  Amazing! The extra proof in this one really brings out the flavors and holds up well on the rocks.  Highly recommend picking a bottle up if your passing through Quincy!

Not common, but can be found with a little effort in MA for $35
Nose – Spicy, Little bit of Oak and Vanilla
Taste – Definitely some burn as expected it to be from the high 112.8 proof, but it’s from the Rye, once you get past that you pick up Citrus, Vanilla and Toffee
Finish – Long, Dry, Oak and Caramel that slowly fades away
Value –  Quality smooth barrel proof bourbon at an inexpensive cost!

Taste – Smooth, Light, Sweet, Big Caramel, Vanilla and Short Bread
Finish –  Short, Dry, Oak with a touch of spice and Almond

Bottled at 80 Proof, Distilled at Heaven Hill in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY
I have never seen this bottle on a shelf in MA, but a buddy got me a bottle from Illinois for $13.99
Nose – Very Sweet, Dried Cherries and Oak
Taste – Still Sweet, bit a wheat upfront, Caramel, Vanilla, with a touch of cinnamon
Finish – Dry, good amount of oak stays for awhile and honey
Value – If you’re a fan of Maker’s Mark I highly suggest giving this a try.  For the half the price you can’t go wrong with it.  I wish I could find this in MA because it’s pretty decent neat or on the rocks.  I would definitely keep it in my cabinet to have on hand for a  wheated bourbon.

Elmer T. Lee – Single Barrel Bourbon

ElmerTLee.jpgElmer T. Lee Single Barrel – Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bottled at 90 Proof, Distilled at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, KY
No Age Statement on the bottle, but it’s said to be aged for 12 years
I seem to find this one locally pretty often every few weeks.  Paid $30 have seen it as low as $28 and as high as $50 in MA.
Nose – Honey, Vanilla and Clove
Taste – Honey, Raisins, Pepper and Cherries
Finish – Long and Warm, Burnt Sugar, some Oak,
Value – There is a lot of hype about this bottle!  If you can find for $30-$35 I’d say give it a shot if you’ve never tried it.  It’s a single barrel bourbon that is supposedly aged 12 years so that’s a great price.  Personally I still can’t seem to like this one.  A lot of people I know love it, but to me it’s just not there, it’s missing something.

Taste:  Smooth, little bit of pepper and oak up front, then a splash of citrus and vanilla
Finish:   Great long finish, cherries, brown sugar, toffee and rye.

No Age Statement on bottle believed to be 9 years
Barrel Proof, Bottled at 129.7 Proof by Buffalo Trace
Distillery in Frankfort, KY
$49.99 for it at my local store, but have seen it as high as $99 around MA. I’ve only seen it at four stores over the last 2 years.  It can be difficult to find as it’s only released 2 times a year.

Nose:  Fairly light nose, hint of chocolate, clove and vanilla

Taste:  Smooth for 129.7 proof!  sweet, brown sugar with some bitter chocolate, hint of smoke, some spice from the rye

Finish:  Full and Rich, just the right amount of oak, binge cherries, doesn’t last as long as I would like!

Value: A must buy at $49.99 for a cask strength bourbon!
