Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon

michters-toasted-barrel-finish-bourbonMichter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon
Bottled at 91.4 Proof by Michter’s Distillery in Louisville, KY
This bourbon is blended.  They use bourbon barrel aged around 8 years and then placed to aged in a second barrel which is assembled from 18-month air dried wood and then toasted but not charred.
This one was quite hard to find in MA and probably is all over.  It’s small batch limited release in 2014 and 2015.  They just recently announced they weren’t releasing it this year for 2016 in order to keep up with the demand of their regular Bourbon.  I ended up finding a local store down the Cape that still had a few bottles left from last years batch. Priced in MA $50-$65.
Nose – Sweet, Some Oak, and Caramel
Taste –   Dry, Oily, Vanilla, Oak, a bit Burnt, Nutty, with bursts of Spicy Cinnamon,
Finish – Long Burst of Cinnamon lingers in your mouth
Value –  Pretty unique! If you see it on the shelf it’s worth the purchase to give it a try.

Not common, but can be found with a little effort in MA for $35
Nose – Spicy, Little bit of Oak and Vanilla
Taste – Definitely some burn as expected it to be from the high 112.8 proof, but it’s from the Rye, once you get past that you pick up Citrus, Vanilla and Toffee
Finish – Long, Dry, Oak and Caramel that slowly fades away
Value –  Quality smooth barrel proof bourbon at an inexpensive cost!

I have not seen this locally near me in MA, but found a bottle on a trip to NH for $45
Nose – Let it open up a bit and it reminds me of Fall Spices, Cinnamon, Sweet Apple and Oak.
Taste – Sweet fruit upfront, Vanilla, Dried Cherries, and Cinnamon.
Finish – Warm Oak, Cinnamon and Caramel
Value – If you want a really different bourbon this one will surprise you. A bit sweet, but refreshing. It’s worth it!

No Age Statement on bottle believed to be 9 years
Barrel Proof, Bottled at 129.7 Proof by Buffalo Trace
Distillery in Frankfort, KY
$49.99 for it at my local store, but have seen it as high as $99 around MA. I’ve only seen it at four stores over the last 2 years.  It can be difficult to find as it’s only released 2 times a year.

Nose:  Fairly light nose, hint of chocolate, clove and vanilla

Taste:  Smooth for 129.7 proof!  sweet, brown sugar with some bitter chocolate, hint of smoke, some spice from the rye

Finish:  Full and Rich, just the right amount of oak, binge cherries, doesn’t last as long as I would like!

Value: A must buy at $49.99 for a cask strength bourbon!

Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength

20160726_220054_wmI have not tasted many Scotches, but figured since today is National Scotch Day I should write about one.
Bottled at 112.6 Proof by Laphroaig Distillery on Port Ellen, Isle of Islay
I Paid $65 for it at my local store, but have seen it as high as $90 around MA.  Most stores will carry the Regular 10 year, but the cask strength I’ve only seen at a handful of stores.

Nose:  Your first sniff you get a definitive sweet medicine smell, ocean seawater/seaweed and smokiness

Taste:  Smooth, Peat hits you upfront then a subtle taste of salt, sweetness of berries and vanilla

Finish: Really nice and full, some oak with the smokiness of a campfire/BBQ leaves you wanting more!

Value:  At $65 for cask a strength scotch it’s worth it!  Especially if you enjoy full flavor of peat/smokiness.
